Homemade Products #1: Natural Oven Cleaner

before and after

One of my least favourite cleaning jobs involves the oven. Not only is it a greasy job but the commercial oven cleaners are the most toxic and produce unpleasant fumes. The fumes get into your lungs and linger around the house and the chemical residues remain in the oven long after cleaning. To protect yourself and your family from these toxins, simply create a natural oven cleaner using the following recipe (via Yum Universe). It removes grime and dirt just as effectively as commercial products with the same amount of effort.

oven cleaner ingredients2  Let’s get cleaning:

1. Remove all racks and clean them separately in the sink

2. Pour all your ingredients into a glass bowl and mix well

3.Using a pastry brush, paint the paste over the entire surface of the oven

4. Let the paste sit for 6-8 hours or overnight

5. Fill a bowl with clean water. Using a scrubber, repeatedly wipe the oven clean, until all the paste is off

Sit back and admire your naturally sparkling oven!

  2. Glad you like it! If you don’t have as much time to spare, you can make a more concentrated paste by increasing the amount of baking soda and vinegar. You can use as much baking soda as you need – depending on how dirty your oven is as it’s completely non toxic. Try and clean using the paste once a week so the dirt doesn’t build up and you’ll find it is a lot easier and takes less time AND elbow grease!
